tool farming
sse · philosophy · tools
i make tools the way a farmer makes crops, with attention to the full cycle and not just the harvest. does this tool need to exist? what does it consume? what happens when it's no longer needed? can it be composted, repurposed, forked, or let go without leaving damage?
tools are not products. a product has a market, a roadmap, and a growth metric. my tools have a user, often just me, and a job. when the job changes, the tool changes or retires. no obligation to scale it.
permatechnic framing. boom is a permatechnic tool. it uses things that already exist, namely mpv, yt-dlp, and fzf, composted into something small and personal. no server, no account, no update nag.
joyful tools. a tool i enjoy using is a tool i will maintain. aesthetics, tactility, and the small pleasure of a well-named function are not decorations.
tool farming is part of soft stack ecology, the production philosophy that asks whether a tool needs to exist before building it.
