the operational sub-system of soft stack ecology: calm, boring, and observable. i treat systems as things to tend, not optimize, with deliberate pacing, clear handoffs, and legible runbooks. the goal is a mature, self-sustaining climax system. boring is the goal.
i borrow from zen not as aesthetic but as method, the practice of returning attention to what is actually in front of me, repeatedly, without drama.
boring by design. if my alerts fire rarely and mean something, my logs are legible, and my runbooks exist and are accurate, that is success. if a system needs a hero to keep it running, it has already failed.
observable over clever. a system i can watch is a system i can tend. cleverness, the elegant abstraction and the tight hack, is often opacity in disguise.
tend, don't optimise. optimisation implies a finish line. tending implies ongoing care. a garden is never optimised; it is watered, pruned, observed, and slightly adjusted.
deliberate pacing. not everything needs to happen now. a change that can wait until the next morning probably should. urgency is often a feeling, not a fact.
in practice: boom has a history file i can read in a text editor. rssprint has no dependencies to rot. audiovis is a shell script i can open and understand in five minutes. these are zenops artifacts.
